Giving Tuesday: a day that encourages people to do good.

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. The idea caught on, and has grown around the world, inspiring hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

This year, the Diocese of Montreal is giving you a choice of two different diocesan appeals:

The Bishop’s Action Appeal which supports the Sisters of St. John the Divine’s A Home for the Heart, for necessary improvements and repairs to their guest house.

and

The Bishop’s Dinner appeal – an opportunity to help us keep our financial commitment to Action Refugies, Mile End Community Mission and Tyndale St Georges Community Centre.

Both campaigns support ministries that are at the heart of our Anglican communion … I encourage you to follow your own heart in deciding where to give.

On behalf of the staff of the diocese I’d like to thank you – none of this work could happen without you.

A Message from The Anti Racism Task Force

Dear colleagues in ministry,

We hope you are well. As you may recall, the Synod of the Diocese of Montreal voted unanimously this summer to require that all clergy licensed in the Diocese, all postulants for ordination, Synod Office staff, Diocesan Council members, Lay Readers, Church Staff, and Wardens participate in a program of multi-cultural awareness and anti-bias training, which we would design and offer on a cyclical basis.

We, the members of the Anti-Racism Task Force, are delighted to announce that the first two opportunities to participate in that training have been scheduled and are now open for enrollment.

Each session will consist of ten (10) hours of online training, offered over four days. Please sign up for a session ONLY if you are currently able to participate in all four days of the course. Please note that each session will be facilitated bilingually in English and in French.

The course will be offered twice in 2024:

 Spring Training 2024:

Saturday, February 24, 10:00-12:30

Sunday, February 25, 2:30-5:00

Saturday, March 9, 10:00-12:30

Sunday, March 10, 2:30-5:00

 Fall Training 2024:

Saturday, November 9, 10:00-12:30

Sunday, November 10, 2:30-5:00

Saturday, November 16, 10:00-12:30

Sunday, November 17, 2:30-5:00

We are aware that some of you may be in areas where internet access is a significant obstacle. If that is the case, please contact Sophie Bertrand, who will work to find ways to enable you to participate.

Space is limited and a lot of us are mandated to take this, so if you anticipate leaving your current position soon after the first training, perhaps you should hold off and allow your successor to enroll in the November training instead. We will also be encouraging all members of our Diocese to enroll as time and space permit; our task as disciples is to grow in love, and this course gives us concrete tools to enhance our ability to serve God by loving our neighbors.

Please click here to enroll. As the dates of your session approach, you should expect to receive a participant manual and zoom links by e-mail.

We look forward to undertaking this important learning with you!

 In Christ,

 Deborah Meister

On behalf of the Anti-Racism Task Force

 Deborah Meister

Your participation in our fundraising efforts is such a blessing to me and to our recipients!

Thanks to your generous response to last year’s appeal, we were able to contribute over $100,000 to three local missions: Action Réfugiés Montréal, The Mile End Community Mission and Tyndale-St Georges Community Centre.

While we’re not holding an event this year, the need for funds persists. This year we are again asking you to help us fulfill our commitment to these three deserving communities:

Action Réfugiés Montréal: We offer justice and compassion to refugeed people, through three main programs. Our detention program provides support to individuals detained for administrative reasons, connecting them to resources and to family. This includes purchasing phone cards to connect with family in other countries, as the government does not otherwise allow detained individuals to make international calls. Our refugee sponsorship program welcomed over 110 people in 2022, including many Afghans as well as Eritreans, Congolese, and refugeed people from other countries. Our social inclusion programs build connections between newcomers and long-term Montreal residents, showing what true community can look like.

The Mile End Community Mission: Last summer, following a long period of lock-downs and worries, we were finally able to re-open our doors to our members for regular programs and services including: our free breakfast and lunches, our weekly foodbank, our wonderful little thrift store, our summer café-terrace, art program and numerous fun activities and outings. To date, we are operating as usual, but as we gear up for colder weather, we are ready to implement any precautions or that may be warranted.

A new season has begun at Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre, bringing with it exciting developments. The After School Program is bustling with 63 enthusiastic participants. The Weekend Program continues to cater to the needs of children and their parents in the community. Additionally, the Early Childhood Department offers essential support to parents with children aged 0 to 5, while the Adult Centre's Pre-Employment Program is at full capacity, with many eager individuals seeking to acquire new skills and rejoin the workforce.

Information on these ministries can be found on our website. To donate click here then scroll down to select local missions.

Fall Festivals and Trunk or Treat: Reaching out to Families in the Diocese of Montreal

On Tuesday, October 31st, St. Paul’s Church in Greenfield Park, hosted its first Trunk or Treat event. Almost 1000 trick or treaters and their families stopped by the decorated cars and play games to collect candy! It was an incredible opportunity to interact with many families in the community. Parents were very thankful for the opportunity for the safe place to trick or treat and many of the neighbours were saying that we needed to do it again next year.

(Karen Rye, St Paul’s Greenfield Park)

On October 27th, Christ Church Beaurepaire hosted a Fall Festival. Here is what they learned: When you reach the parents, you reach the kids! By publicizing our Fall Festival on the local Facebook ‘mom groups’, posters at libraries, coffeeshops, pools and other community areas, we were able to welcome hundreds of families who had a great time enjoying games, free homemade supper, candy prizes, and spending time with their community.
